It’s a typical chicken and egg situation where we need more women leaders / mentors for other women. Women leaders can serve as advocates for gender diversity and help women colleagues navigate the unique challenges of the tech industry.

Agreed, even if the goal is not to get to 50% women in every industry I think having so few models to follow is one reason women may not consider some of these careers. In addition there can be network effects, for instance I believe there’s evidence that female VCs fund other women at a higher than average rate, so we might see more representation if there were more women making those decisions. But in the meantime, I don’t think it helps to tell women, on the basis of very little clear evidence, that they should be expected to be treated badly if they pursue these jobs.

The VC data that you bring up raises the interesting question of why gender integration is successful there. Maybe it points to a greater diversity of opinions and feedback leading to better pitches for funding.

It appears the never-ending battle against sensationalism continues on with the requisite number of casualties. Good job trying to rebalance the scales and tilt our culture towards a healthier intellectual diet! For some reason, I doubt that a body dysmorphic worker is a highly competent one!
